Something I am working on right now. Just practicing my digital coloring. Reference was used and I painted with Corel Painter Essential 4. I'll post the finish version when I am done.

I tried my best at anatomy, but there are still a lot of mistakes. Inspired by the weekly art challenges #2 (weekly art challenge). It was very interesting drawing with a limited palette. Would love to experiment more with limited palettes.

Well August is coming to an end so here's another post before the month is over. I plan to color and add a background to this digital drawing. The dress is based on a dress I saw in Nylon Magazine.

Process of a Charcoal Sketch

A post to show the progression of my sketch of Joseph Gordon-Levitt. I used a picture of him from the August 2010 issue of Details as reference.
Below is a picture of the materials I used to make this sketch. Canson XL series Mix Media 9x12 sketchbook, pencil box to rest sketch book on to prevent distortion, pencil sharpener, .5mm mechanical pencil, compressed charcoal stick (medium hardness), vine charcoal, a charcoal pencil, white eraser, a kneadable eraser, q-tips and tissues for blending.

It first made a rough sketch with my mechanical pencil and I kept refining it until I was satisfied. Then I proceed to shade it with charcoal.

I like saving the eyes for last because they are the finishing touches and what really makes a portrait.

More shading and the portrait is almost complete.

Made with Tegaki E, a Kimi ni Todoke version of Frog Prince. I imagine Kurumi as the princess who got rejected and the good witch (Sawako) ends up with the frog prince (Kazehaya).

This is something I drew for the New Years, something along the line of ancient Chinese girl in modern setting. It didn't come out the way I wanted, but I'll post it here anyways. Originally drawn in marker and edited in Photoshop. I really don't like how the face came out. Better luck next time I guess.

This took me a little longer than I thought it would. Line art done in pen and cleaned up then colored in Open Canvas 1.1. I have been watching speedpaint on Youtube and I was inspired. I was too lazy to draw a background, maybe next time ;)

It snowed yesterday. Not a lot though.

It took a while to finish because I had to wait for the ink washes to dry. An impromptu still life.

This year wasn't my year for NaNoWriMo, but there is always next year.
Anyways, I have started on my series of girls in ancient Chinese costume. I am most inspired by period drama, wuxia movies and the art of Taiwanese artist Dezhen, Chen Shu-Fen and Ping-Fen. For now enjoy these ink paintings.

More What If Illo

Haven't posted in a while. Halloween is around the corner! This is the original illustration I did for What IF, in the final version some of the drawing is cut off and there was a little bit of shadow added. I don't think I executed my idea the way I wanted to, but it hardly ever ends up the way you imagine it would!

Tune in tomorrow for two brand new illustrations, so new I haven't even drawn them yet! :P

The Creative Process

This was an illustration for What IF magazine

I first sketch these out in pencil and then I inked them and colored them with color pencil and then I scanned them.

Small playing cards were scanned for the background.
After putting everything together on the computer and retouching and manipulating the different elements, this is the final illustration.

The character in the illustration was too androgynous, so I made the gender more clear and it became a man, skinny plaid pants "punk rocker" man. And that's it!

I'm pretty amaze by the existence of high school and college specializing in manhwa in South Korea. I would love to go to one. (^-^)

Another one of my older drawings done completely on the computer using a mouse.
I have many things that I have to work on! Folds in clothes are so hard to draw. They come as lines on my drawing instead of being 3D. I have to observe more fabrics to improve. :)

The top pic is a surreal collage created when I was in Grade 12, the middle one is a puppet made of card stock, bottom is oil pastel where a photo reference was used. These were photographed so the quality is a little poor. The cloud design in the first pic was inspired by a design in one of works in the Rising Stars of Manga. In the heart of the puppet is some pieces of twine stuck in two layers of tape. And the photo for the bottom pic was taken after white Juan.

Done on 9x12 drawing paper with Chinese ink. Initially it was going to be more surreal. Photo reference was used. The horse on the left is base on those mechanical horses you can ride for a quarter and the one on the right is based on a real horse.

The idea for this picture was the thought of a strange young girl who would pluck all the petals off her flowers and then put them in a vase. But a chandelier looks cooler. Done with pens and marker, retouched with Pixia.
